- Most telecom outdoor base stations are often unattended, which result to Li-ion batteries susceptible to safety risks under improper maintenance. Such as mechanical abuse, electrical abuse, and thermal abuse, because of these factors that thermal runaway of Li-ion battery cells, posing a fire and explosion hazard.
- Under the complex operating conditions, the actual lifespan can be significantly reduced due to factors such as ambient temperature fluctuations, charging and discharging strategies, and cell consistency, therefore the cycle life of LFP battery can be reduced by more than 60%.
- Most importantly Telecom LFP battery experience a sharp spike in internal resistance at lower temperatures, dropping their standalone discharge efficiency to a mere 50-60% at -20℃, during a real grid failure, the precious battery capacity meant to keep vital telecom gear online for as long as possible is wasted on self-heating, which drastically shortens actual network backup time.
- Direct sunlight can easily cause the internal temperature of outdoor base station cabinets to surge into the 55–60℃ range during summer. Under continuous high-temperature exposure, LFP battery experience accelerated chemical degradation and parasitic side-reactions, resulting in premature capacity fading and a severely shortened lifespan. For remote or rugged terrains where maintenance requires mountain climbing or helicopter access, frequent battery replacements trigger astronomical OPEX costs.

- The raw material of Li-ion battery is in great fluctuations, the supply chain of Li-ion battery is not stable, therefore the Capex and TCO are increasing. For example,from January to April 2026, the price of lithium carbonate fluctuated between 120,000 and 130,000 yuan/ton. In May, it surged to 201,400 yuan/ton. As of June 26, it is in a high-level fluctuation pattern, and the supply and demand for the whole year will only be in a tight balance.
- In 2023, the EU adopted a new version of the Battery and Waste Battery Regulation, which clearly defined mandatory recycling targets: by 2031, the recycling rate of lithium in waste batteries must reach 80%, cobalt 90%, and nickel 95%. At the same time, it fully implemented the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system, requiring battery manufacturers to assume recycling obligations throughout the entire life cycle, thus ensuring the implementation of the recycling system from an institutional perspective.
